David Lee Hammond

David Lee Hammond, 69, of Choctaw, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2024, at his residence. David was born December 19, 1954, in Okmulgee, to Gerald E. and Mary Alma (Frees) Hammond. He was reared and educated in Owasso, graduating from Owasso High School in 1973. He competed in wrestling and football, earning a scholarship to NSU. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Science and later earned a Master’s in Education and his Principal Certification. David spent his entire teaching career in Copan Public Schools teaching various science courses. He also served as the Principal of the elementary school for a short time.

David married Melody Ann Burnside on May 26, 1979, in Bartlesville. The couple made their home in the Bartlesville/Dewey area until retirement brought them to the Norman area and later to Choctaw. David enjoyed watching Dallas Cowboys football and seeing his grandson wrestle. He also enjoyed playing cards with his siblings and extended family, and board games with all his grandchildren. He and Melody were active in the East Cross United Methodist Church in Bartlesville. While members of the church, David drove the church bus picking up children for vacation bible school for several years. He was a great supporter of the Washington County 4-H Club and an active member of the Bartlesville Elks Lodge. He was also very active in the many school activities in which his kids participated.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry Hammond.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife Melody of nearly 45 years; son Kevin and his wife Wendy Hammond; daughter Joy and husband Stephen Henderson, all of Oklahoma City; a brother Robert Hammond of Tennessee; sister Lynette Garrett of Owasso; and four grandchildren: Connor, Rori, Tyler and Logan; numerous extended family and friends.

The casket will be open at the Asa Smith Funeral Home in Harrah from 10:00 a.m to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2024, and Thursday, March 28, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. for visitation. Funeral services will commence at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2024. The burial will be at the McGuire Cemetery of Lucien at 3:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
