George Kelly Welton

George Kelly Welton, 84, longtime Harrah resident, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2022, at St, Anthony’s Medical Center of Midwest City. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 21, 2022, at the Asa Smith Funeral Chapel of Harrah. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery of McAlester at 3:00 p.m. The family will greet friends 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. George was born August 25, 1937, in McAlester, the last of eight children to Roy and Beulah (Kelly) Welton. As the son of a minister he showed a bit of an onery side as he was raised and educated in McAlester, graduating in 1955. He served in the United States Navy. George married Ida Joy Grubbs in July 26, 1960, in Crowder, the couple lived in McAlester for 12 years before moving to Midwest City, from there the couple moved to Harrah in 1978. George was a longtime rancher in Harrah, raising Gelbvieh cattle, and was a big supporter of the local Future Farmers of America chapter. He and Ida received the FFA “Honorary Chapter Farmer” Award. George, also, worked many years for the Oklahoma City U.S. Post Office, retiring as logistic coordinator. George, later in life, was always eager to take trips to McAlester and Hogden to visit family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ida in 2017, son George “Curtis” Welton, and all of siblings, including Bill, Jack, Victor, and Martha. Survivors include his son Edward Welton of Harrah, grandsons Zach and wife Courteney Welton of Guthrie, Ethan Welton and Fiancee’ Makenzie Cornell of Harrah, Murph and wife Sierra Welton of Newalla; great-grandchildren Blaine, Lilah, and Nola; sisters-in-law Betty Smith of Crowder, Linda and husband James Hamilton of McAlester; brother-in-law Gary and wife Marketta Grubbs of McAlester; nieces Victoria Love, Penny Oss, Jackie Dipillo, nephew Jeffrey Welton; plus many other relatives and friends. The family would like to recognize and give heartfelt thanks to Kelly, Holly, Liz, and Brent with Elite Home Health for taking such good care of George during his last few years.
