Melvin Eugene Wilkins, 74, of Harrah, passed from this life with his wife by his side, Wednesday, October 12, 2022.
Mel was born September 30, 1948, in Olney, Texas, to Floyd Leroy and Norma Ruth (Willerton) Wilkins. The family moved to Fox, Oklahoma, in 1950, where he attended school, graduating from Fox High School in 1966. Mel was active in the band and choir during high school and during his senior year even drove the school bus. A love of music was put into Mel’s heart at a young age, from singing in school, to his church, where directed the church choir at age 14. Melvin married Winellen Elaine Halbert on May 23, 1970, at the First Baptist Church in McLoud. He attended Oklahoma State University earning a Master’s Degree in Music Education in 1971. While attending OSU he sang with the University Singers Gospel Quartet. Mel served as Minister of Music for several Baptist Churches including Sulpher, Midwest City, Choctaw and Newalla. While in Choctaw he formed the Watchman Quartet. In 1994, he became bi-vocational and was the owner/operator of G&R Cable Company. In addition to his singing and teaching abilities, Melvin also played the guitar and had a passion for motorcycles, and the buying, fixing up and selling of old cars. He retired in 2016, later moving to Harrah in 2019.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Winellen of the home; sister Karen and husband Mark Alexander of Fairland; sister-in-law Eileen Vaughan of Oklahoma City; brother-in-law George and wife Cindy Halbert of Shawnee; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at the First Baptist Church of Newalla. Pastor David Nolan will officiate. Burial will follow in the Memory Lane Cemetery of Harrah.
The casket will be open at the funeral home Monday, 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
