Syble Durant

Long time Harrah resident Syble Jewel Sutton Durant, 91 years young, passed away on February 16, 2018. Syble was born in Velma-Alma, Oklahoma on January 1, 1927. Her family moved a few times within the state, and she graduated as Salutatorian from her high school in Dale. She enrolled in the Cadet Nurse Corps training program, but clearly that was not her destiny, for soon after enrollment, she caught the eye of a young soldier in a drug store in Oklahoma City. After about six weeks, they married on Valentine’s Day of 1946. Syble married Lorne Durant, and they were able to celebrate 59 years of marriage before he died. Two things defined Syble throughout her life: faith and family. She was a godly woman who demonstrated her faith by how she lived her life every day to every person she met. And she loved her family: her parents Ardie and Percy, her brothers James, Olen Ray, Haskell, sisters Ann and Inez. And her children Preston, Steve, Dennis, Marsha, Teresa, and Karyn. And all of the in-laws and out-laws that came along with those folks. And most specially, she treasured all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, which at last count numbered 48 altogether. Syble never met a grandbaby she didn’t want to hold. Syble enjoyed quilting, baking, going to the auction with Lorne, and playing games at the Harrah Senior Center. She also enthusiastically cheered on the OU Sooners and the OKC Thunder. She proudly displayed plaques and ribbons she had won at the Oklahoma County Fair over the years, and anyone who knows her can tell about the year her dog jumped on the table to get into one of her pies…she really had to scramble that year to bake another entry, and it took a blue ribbon. Syble is survived by sister Inez, brother Olen, all of her children and their families, and other family and friends. The funeral service will be held at the Asa Smith Funeral Home in Harrah on February 20 at 11:00AM, with Rev. Gary Eubanks officiating. Visitation will be held at Asa Smith on February 19 from 4:00-8:00PM. Burial will follow the funeral at Memory Lane Cemetery in Harrah In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the USO.
