Verna Jean Jones

Verna Jean Jones, 79, of McLoud, passed away at her home in McLoud, Tuesday, December 17, 2024, with her family by her side. Verna was born January 27, 1945, to John and Dovie (Moses) Harrison in Richmond, California. The family made their way back to Oklahoma where Verna graduated from Kinta High School in Kinta, Oklahoma.

Verna met her husband through her brother while he was stationed in Germany. She and George corresponded for quite some time before actually meeting face to face and where married on January 10, 1964, at the courthouse in Pauls Valley. The couple made their home in Midwest City before moving to McLoud in the 1970’s. When their children were old enough, Verna continued her studies at Central State University (UCO) in 1982, with a bachelor's degree in education. Verna taught school at Life Christian School for 4 years, Choctaw High School for 12 years, and Mabel Basset Prison for 5 years. Even after retirement Verna continued to substitute for Harrah High School for several more years. Verna was a devoted and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of McLoud.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband of nearly 61 years, George of the home; daughter Tonya Farley of McLoud; two grandchildren Louis and Alexander Farley; and host of other relatives and many friends and former students.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Franklin “Wade” Jones, brothers J.B. Harrison and Edward Brackett, and three sisters Ethelene Holt, Carol Prader and Helen Hulsey.

Friends may greet the family from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2024, at the First Baptist Church of McLoud. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery of McLoud.
